Incineration is a proven methodology and has long been the accepted means of dealing with PCB impacted soil and hydrocarbon based sludge and will always provide an option for certain persistent contaminants and waste streams.

The team at PS2 have always believed in a better way and developed the TPS technology to minimize the amount of material destined for incineration to only that which was absolutely necessary.  For instance when treated using the TPS the amount of PCB waste sent for incineration is less than 0.75% of the original soil quantity.

The TPS technology is a closed loop, indirectly heated system.  This means at no time does flame come into contact with the impacted soil.  Unlike with incineration, the only combustion is from the natural gas used to heat the extraction chambers.  This process produces no more harmful air emissions than those of any industrial boiler.  Operating at temperatures of 600°C, in comparison to incinerators which operate at over 1000 °C, ensures significantly less consumption of natural gas and significantly less production of greenhouse gases.

The extracted PCBs represent a very small proportion of the overall soil requiring treatment.  This material can be safely contained or recycled and when proven sodium based dechlorination technology is used for chemical destruction of the extracted PCBs the remaining by-products are no more than road salt and diesel oil.  This process is internationally proven and was used by PS2 during the Homebush Bay Remediation in Sydney, Australia to destroy extracted DDT and Agent Orange which was publicly acknowledged by Greenpeace as the future treatment methodology for management of Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) around the world.

Clients around the world have readily embraced this technology as the ecological alternative to incineration. With the TPS technology a clean up is just that… clean.
