Tailings Ponds: A Disaster Waiting to Happen: There’s a serious problem that results from a lot of mining processes around the world, in which huge tailings ponds have been constructed that are filled with millions of gallons of colloidal suspensions. These giant reservoirs are filled with water heavily laden with mud and sediment that has no beneficial use. As time goes on, the dams that hold this water can degrade and fail resulting in incalculable damage and loss of life.
Signet Aggregates has developed a Colloidal Suspension Clarification Technology that, in tandem with conventional processing techniques, will concentrate a tailings pond’s suspended materials and allow fresh water to be removed, thus reducing volume and liability.
In an example of our process, we started with a colloidal suspension with a concentration of 129,000 ppm. We ran that mixture through a high velocity pump and into our Colloidal Clarification Technology and produced a stratified output that basically consisted of 1/4 fresh water. This process can be repeated very quickly and inexpensively and we hope to reduce the volume of tailings ponds to less than half.
Our technology can reduce your substantial mine tailings volume by concentrating the suspended colloidal solids into a more dense finished product, freeing up the trapped fresh water to run off or use in other processes.
