Disaster and Emergency Management Services
When a natural or man-made disaster strikes, it affects a region’s infrastructure, facilities, operations of government agencies and the lives and livelihoods of an entire community. The Louis Berger Group leverages our global presence and planning, engineering and environmental expertise to support our clients’ disaster management needs. Immediately following the devastating earthquake in Haiti in January 2010, LBG deployed a multidisciplinary team of engineers, disaster response experts and development professionals. Our team deployed from U.S.-based offices and coordinated closely with our ongoing operations in Haiti and the Dominican Republic.
From pre-disaster planning to long-term economic redevelopment of an affected area, LBG offers services in all stages of disaster management. We work with national, state and local governments to assist with disaster preparedness and provide training to ensure a community is best positioned to mitigate the effects of such a hazard. LBG also has proven rapid response capabilities, and we are able to support those in immediate need in a variety of ways, including delivery of relief supplies and provision of emergency power generation. LBG is renowned for being the first into an area to conduct damage and infrastructure assessments and assisting our government clients in the identification of reconstruction projects that will most efficiently improve the lives of those affected. In December 2001, we entered Afghanistan and conducted a rapid assessment of the country’s road network. We did the same in South Sudan. We responded to the island of American Samoa after a devastating tsunami in 2009 to conduct damage assessments for the U.S. Postal Service.
Disaster recovery is a process that can take months or even years, and LBG’s integrated solutions include master planning, infrastructure reconstruction and debris management. Natural and man-made hazards can devastate a community’s economic and social infrastructure, making long term economic redevelopment critical to the sustainability of any physical reconstruction. LBG not only has a depth of experts in physical infrastructure, but also has experienced economists, sociologists and development specialists who collaborate with our clients to evaluate and implement long-term redevelopment strategies to promote sustainable livelihoods.
