Disposal of Waste Services

The Landfill Directive sets all-encompassing protection goals for the disposal of waste. Its impact on the way waste is managed is very significant. The Directive sets targets to reduce the amount of biodegradable material disposed to landfills.

Recycling of many biosolids to land is likely to be the most environmentally and ecologically sound method. However, nutrients, pathogens and persistent chemicals may represent significant obstacles to this use of biosolids. There is also an increased need for market development and appropriate assessment of waste materials before they go to land, but perceived risks in using such wastes are often significantly greater than real risks.

We have relevant expertise and experience at several levels, including chemical and organic carbon R&D, field trials, regulatory implementation and risk assessment. We can assist clients in demonstrating the benefits of recycling waste to land to regulators and commercial markets.

  • Development of a Code of Practice for using recycled organic materials in land reclamation in the UK
  • Human health and environmental risk assessment of MBT CLO on agricultural land
  • Development of risk-based protocols for manufactured topsoil
  • Development of tools for using chemical limit values for soils and wastes for UK Regulatory Organisations
  • Assessment of the market potential of MBT CLO applications
