NPDES Permitting Support
EA implements Whole Effluent Toxicity (WET) testing programs to support our clients’ NPDES permit biomonitoring requirements. We perform acute and chronic toxicity testing with a wide variety of freshwater and saltwater vertebrate and invertebrate test species in compliance with EPA and state regulatory guidelines. Our scientists are knowledgeable regulatory specialists and supportive advocates who often team with our clients in NPDES permit negotiations and are instrumental in obtaining defensible permit compliance limits with appropriate test species and accurate dilution estimates.
EA is a leader in Toxicity Identification Evaluation (TIE) and Toxicity Reduction Evaluation (TRE) studies. We have conducted well over 150 TREs nationwide—more than any other firm in North America. Our toxicologists, regulatory specialists, and wastewater engineers work closely with clients throughout the country to cost-effectively identify and resolve industrial, municipal, and stormwater toxicity issues.

EA’s Ecotoxicology Laboratory is certified, authorized, or approved to perform NPDES compliance testing on effluent discharges on an individual state basis or through our National Environmental Laboratory Accreditation Conference (NELAC) certification. Most states that have formal certification programs allow laboratories to perform Toxicity Identification Evaluations/Toxicity Reduction Evaluations due to the complexity and skill necessary to successfully perform this forensic assessment.
