Industrial Hygiene and Safety Services
Our industrial hygiene professionals have assisted many industrial and commercial clients to identify and evaluate occupational, environmental, health and safety problems. Our staff of safety professionals is experienced in conducting industrial hygiene sampling and monitoring to evaluate worker exposure, perform health hazard assessments, evaluate ventilation systems, and conduct noise surveys. They offer skills in the evaluation of chemical and physical hazards as well as the application of control technology and programs. Our staff also provides recommendations for corrective actions to assist our clients in identifying efficient, cost effective solutions.
EEI uses state-of-the-art equipment and current sampling and analytical methods to evaluate worker exposure to airborne contaminants as well as other occupational hazards. All workplace evaluations involving potential worker exposure are conducted in accordance with the sampling and analytical protocols developed by the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA).
EEI has provided industrial hygiene services for many industrial/manufacturing facilities, universities, government agencies including the Department of Energy, State of Ohio EPA, Federal EPA, local and regional school districts, and private sector clients.
Microbial Assessments and Sampling
EEI’s EAG conducts indoor air quality, moisture and mold assessments for residential and commercial properties. The components of an assessment are determined on an as needed basis; however, an assessment may consist of a visual inspection, consultation with construction experts, and sampling. An initial assessment of the building is conducted by one of EEI’s experienced members. EEI uses non-invasive techniques including direct-reading instruments and visual assessments to identify moisture sources and visible mold growth. The results of this initial inspection ascertain if further investigative measures, sampling events and remedial actions are needed.
EEI works with leading microbiological laboratories accredited by the Bio Safety Committee of the American Industrial Hygiene Association (AIHA) for analysis of all fungal and microbial samples. EEI follows sampling techniques prepared by the AIHA Bio Safety Committee as described in the Field Guide for the Determination of Biological Contaminants in Environmental Samples. Surface and bulk samples are collected to identify the genus and/or species of fungi and bacteria present in a given location. Air sampling is conducted to identify and quantify airborne concentrations of fungi and bacteria. Data generated from air samples assists in further quantifying the potential health hazard associated with indoor environments.
Phase I/Phase II Assessments
EEI provides Phase I Environmental Site Assessments (ESAs) to an array of clients. Phase I ESAs conducted by EEI have been utilized for property transfer/refinancing, environmental due diligence, and support to RCRA Corrective Actions/Spill Response. The objective of the Phase I ESA is to determine the potential environmental liabilities that exist within a site. A comprehensive investigation includes, but is not limited to, current owner information, title search, historical data, owner/employee interviews, regulatory inquiries and site visits. From the aforementioned investigation, EEI will draw conclusions and recommendations. These recommendations will be founded in EEI's extensive Phase II and remedial/corrective action experience. EEI's commitment is to provide a Phase I ESA that meets the client's needs in a timely, cost-effective and professional manner, within the requirements of ASTM E 1527-05 for Phase I ESAs.
EEI has unique, unequaled experience and expertise in providing Phase II ESAs. EEI has all the equipment, personnel and experience in-house to provide a turnkey Phase II ESA investigation. EEI's remediation experience is paramount to providing a comprehensive Phase II ESA that in addition to determining the nature and extent of any contamination also lends itself to developing a feasible corrective action plan.
Groundwater Monitoring and Storm Water Sampling
EEI has provided groundwater monitoring and storm water sampling services for a number of customers including industrial facilities, Subtitle D landfills, construction and demolition debris landfills, Superfund sites and commercial facilities. EEI’s quality groundwater and storm water services can be attributed to our field services group and degreed staff. Sampling equipment that we utilize includes bailers, pneumatic and electric sampling pumps.
Waste Water Treatment Design
EEI has provided numerous services to industrial wastewater treatment plants including consulting services for the correct mode of operation for treatment systems; specifically, plating wastewater treatment and design of biological treatment plants, and physical/chemical treatment plants for manufacturing facilities. EEI has developed the data for, and submitted to the appropriate district offices, pretreatment baseline reports for a number of these facilities.
Asbestos/Lead Services
EEI’s staff provides licensed asbestos and lead consulting services for numerous school districts in southwest Ohio and northern Kentucky, as well as local industries and universities. These services include six-month and three-year AHERA inspections, implementing asbestos management plans, conducting asbestos surveys, collection of bulk and air asbestos/lead samples and oversight of asbestos/lead removal projects.
Mercury
EEI provides mercury services for local schools and industrial, manufacturing, and commercial clients. Mercury services include: remediation, disposal, initial assessments, mercury monitoring during clean-up activities and final clearance. Real-time air monitoring instruments are used during all mercury services.
Safety and Environmental Training
EEI’s training courses use upbeat instruction, practical real-world examples and hands-on exercises to give the best possible training in an enjoyable format. We take pride in providing workplace specific and interesting training. This enables employees to relate to training by bringing their workplace into the classroom. Our training staff has over 25 years of experience with safety and environmental training. Training classes cover the entire spectrum of EPA and OSHA required training. Our service includes student handouts, competence testing, training certificates, and training documentation.
Environmental and Safety Audits
EEI has conducted environmental and safety audits for numerous companies within the tri-state area. These systematic evaluations of environmental and safety situations can make a substantial difference in prevention of accidents and fines from agencies such as OSHA and EPA. EEI’s professionals will evaluate programs, document findings, and suggest ways to correct any deficiencies.
SPCC And SWP3 Plans
EEI has written Spill Prevention, Control, and Countermeasures (SPCC) plans and Storm Water Pollution Prevention Plans (SWP3) for facilities throughout the tri-state area. Our professionals develop plans that meet the SPCC regulations that were promulgated by the EPA 'to prevent the discharge of oil [in harmful quantities] from facilities into or upon the navigable waters of the United States or adjoining shorelines.' The SWP3s are prepared in accordance with the requirements of the OEPA Ohio General Permit OHR001 and EPA document titled “Storm Water Management for Industrial Activities, Developing Pollution Prevention Plans and Best Management Practices” (US EPA, 1992). The plans describe activities, materials, and physical features of the facility that may contribute significant amounts of pollutants to storm water run-off and the measures that will be implemented to control these pollutants. Additionally, EEI is your emergency response team for the SPCC Plan. EEI has held the ER contract for the Ohio EPA for the past 16 years.
OSHA Compliance
EEI provides resources to help clients prevent occupational injuries and illnesses and comply with the Occupational Safety and Health Act. EEI has developed written programs in compliance with OSHA including but not limited to the following: Hazardous Communication Programs, Respiratory Protection Programs and Aerial Lift Programs.
TRI Preparation
EEI has prepared Toxic Release Inventory (TRI) Reports, SARA 312 Tier II Report Forms and SARA 313 Tier III Reports for facilities throughout the tri-state area. EEI provides a hard copy of the forms in addition to a computer file suitable for submitting to the required agencies. EEI uses the EPA’s TRI software, TRIME 2001, to complete the forms.
