GIS and Remote Sensing Services for EIA
The applications of GIS in Environmental Impact Assessments are numerous, including environmental impact and compliance studies, site investigations and characterizations, natural resource inventory and management assessments, emergency planning and monitoring, transportation/telecommunication site, route and corridor selection and water and power plant site selection.
EIAs require reports of potential impacts of proposed activities. By utilizing GIS modeling tools, potential impacts can be predicted and included in the management and monitoring programs. These models should not be the definitive source of predictions but should complement field surveys and other assessments. GIS and remote sensing could be used in perspective of environmental monitoring for Landuse / Landcover analysis, Wetland assessment and Habitat mapping.
GIS is used to organise and present spatial data in a way that allows effective environmental management planning. Environmental management planning involves the following questions: what is where? why is it there? and, what happens if…? Modeling hypothetical outputs from actual inputs is a useful tool that can aid decision makers by predicting future impacts. Decision makers and planners can use GIS to organize and present spatial data to be more effective.
