Nano Iron - Laboratory Testing Services
Treatability study to verify feasibility of the site remediation using nZVI. The purpose of laboratory study is to test zero-valent iron nanoparticles on contaminated water and soil samples from a real site. The work usually includes kinetic tests of different concentrations of NANOFER on water and soil samples polluted by chlorinated ethenes and heavy metals. Reduction efficiency, pH, ORP and general chemical composition are analyzed in liquid phase during the experiment. The main goal is to verify reactivity and consumtion of the product.
Shaker Test Procedure
The contaminated water and soil are dosed in 500 mL glass bottles in 1 : 2 (soil : water) weight ratio. Bottles are shaken at ambient temperature (aprox. 20 ºC) with 1 minute residence time at end positions. Water samples are analyzed after elapse of chosen reaction time (usually 3-7-14 days in case of chlorinated hydrocarbons): chlorinated hydrocarbons are measured using the head-space method on GC/MS, heavy metals are analyzed on ICP-OES and pH and Eh are measured using a multimeter with appropriate electrodes. Results of the experiment are summarized in conclusions and recommendations for the field application, which:
- minimize costs and risks during pilot and full-scale application
- serve as a background for approval of the application during negotiation with local authorities
Reactor experiments are very simmilar to the shaker test procedure, but they usually work just with contaminated water. On the other hand, it is possible to measure physico-chemical parameters and analyze contamination on-line (continuously) so the reduction processes can be monitored and analyzed in detail.
