Regulatory Compliance
The Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA) and subsequent amendments sets standards, or Maximum Contaminant Levels (MCL), for over 80 contaminants using a process called risk assessment. The nation’s 55,000 Community Water Systems (CWS) may use any state approved treatment method to comply with the MCL, and must verify compliance through monitoring, testing, and reporting to state public health and environmental agencies. Chemicals and media used in the treatment must also conform to American National Standards Institute / National Sanitation Foundation (ANSI / NSF) Standard 60 for direct additives and Standard 61 for indirect additives.
