Thermal Remediation Solutions
From Technologies
From concept to closure we design, build and operate in situ and ex situ thermal remediation systems. Through our subsidiary, TerraTherm, we offer the most advanced thermal remediation technologies in the industry. With more than 16 years of experience in thermal remediation and an impeccable track record, we are confident we can provide you and your clients the right customized solution for your project.

Thermal remediation is ideal for larger sites with heavily contaminated source zones. The thermal technology selected is largely based on the site geological conditions and the contaminants being treated. Thermal can also be used in conjunction with other technologies to treat weaker source zones and plumes.
Thermal remediation can be accomplished via thermal conduction heating (TCH), steam enhanced extraction (SEE), electrical resistance heating (ERH), or a combination of the above. Cascade is uniquely positioned to provide all these technologies along with professional expertise to meet your remediation objectives. We have completed close to 75 projects, all successfully, treating organic contaminants from TCE DNAPL to coal tar and dioxins. We have recovered more than 5 million pounds of contaminants from over 75 contaminated sites worldwide to date.
We also offer on-site ex situ thermal treatment options known as In-Pile Thermal Desorption (IPTD) and the Heated Box (HB-1100). These technologies allow the flexibility of treating contaminated soil that is spread across a wide, shallow area in a small condensed space, increasing the treatment efficiency and reducing associated treatment costs.
Thermal Conduction Heating (TCH)
TCH, also known as In-Situ Thermal Desorption (ISTD) utilizes circuits of electrically powered heaters that are spaced systematically throughout the thermal treatment zone (TTZ). The TTZ is heated via thermal conduction from the heaters to the subsurface. This technology is flexible in that it allows for a wide range of desired treatment temperatures based on the contaminants at your site.
Steam Enhanced Extraction (SEE)
SEE is ideal for treatment of free product and VOCs at sites with greater soil permeability and groundwater flow. Steam is injected through screened wells at designated depths and locations throughout the TTZ. SEE is commonly used in combination with TCH, and is particularly effective for LNAPL sites with mobile product.
Electrical Resistance Heating (ERH)
ERH utilizes electrodes that are installed throughout the TTZ. An electrical current is applied to the electrodes, allowing the electricity to pass from one electrode to another within the subsurface. The electrical resistance creates heat within the TTZ, allowing the site to be treated at low and moderate temperatures.
In-Pile Thermal Desorption® (IPTD®)
This technology is generally used on sites where the contaminated soil is spread out over a wide shallow area, and it would not be efficient or cost effective to treat in-situ. The soil is excavated and placed into a pile structure and treated within the pile structure using TCH technology.
The HB-1100 is a similar approach to TCH treatment as the IPTD technology. The heated box is a rectangular configuration and designed with electrically powered heaters installed in the walls of the box, with one side that can be opened and closed, allowing the structure to be filled with soil. The soil is treated in a shorter amount of time due to heat conduction from the entire surface area of the box and the option of having multiple heated boxes operating simultaneously.
