- Atmospheric Radionuclide Transport Model



ARTM ViewARTM View is a graphical user interface for the German Federal Office for Radiation (BfS) ARTM model. The ARTM model calculates the dispersion and deposition of released airborne radioactive materials in the atmosphere.


ARTM View is the new standard for the dispersion and deposition calculation of airborne radioactive materials according to the German Nuclear Act.

The ARTM model is based on the 'TA Luft' and the 'AUSTAL2000 model'. AUSTAL2000 is a Lagrangian particle tracking air dispersion model from the German Federal Environmental Agency (UAB) (see AUSTAL View). Dose calculations were not included in the ARTM model.

Powerful 3D Visualization

Complete 3D visualization of your entire modeling area.  Sources, buildings, and modeling results are displayed in context with the surrounding terrain. Apply custom textures to buildings to further increase building realism. Create animation file (*.avi) of your 3D visualization.


Export to Google Earth™

This exciting feature allows you to export your buildings, sources, receptors and contours into Google Earth giving you a more realistic image of where your pollutants will impact surrounding areas.


Automated Download of Terrain Data (SRTM)

Advanced terrain processing capabilities available for several terrain data formats such as SRTM, USGS DEM, and XYZ.. Automated download of DEM and SRTM files from webGIS. SRTM3 data at 90m resolution is available worldwide. Automated conversion of these formats into the GridASCII data format required by the model.


Support for Several Base Map Formats

Visualizing your site in ARTM View is easy. Our full-featured support for a variety of image and base map formats allow you to design your model with confidence and view your results in context with your site. Supported base maps include: Bitmap, DLG, DXF, JPEG, LULC, MrSID, Shapefile, and TIFF/GeoTIFF.


Professional Reports

Clear communication of your modeling and results are crucial to a successful project. ARTM View lets you impress with integrated report generation. 'Source Parameters', 'Monitor Point Results', and 'Maximum Calculation Results' are examples of reports automatically generated by ARTM View.


Met Data Visualization Tool - Windrose

Meteo View, which is included in the ARTM View package, allows you to create windrose plots for your meteorological data. The following formats are supported: AKT, AKTerm, AKS, series.dmna, zeitreihe.dmna. Options to manipulate the appearance of the windrose are available such as colors, petal size, grid sectors, etc.


Met Data Visualization Tool - Graph

Meteo View, which is included with the package, can also display bar graphs of the wind class and dispersion class frequency distribution and time series graph for wind speed, wind direction, dispersion class, and rain rates.


German and English Versions Available

The ARTM View user interface, help files, and user's guides are available in German and English languages. The ARTM model currently only writes messages to the log file in German language.

ARTM View is an interface for the ARTM model. See below the technical specifications for this model:

  • Parameter: Description
  • Model Name: ARTM - Atmospheric Radionuclide Transport Model
  • Developed By: German Federal Office for Radiation (BfS)
  • Model Type: Lagrangian particle tracking air dispersion model for radionuclides
  • Range: 100 times the source height. For example, for a stack height of 250 m a range of up to 25 km in radius is realistic.
  • Source Types: Point, area, volume, line, cooling tower
  • Pollutants and Emissions: Multi-radionuclides can be model in a single run
  • Emissions can be specified as constant or time-dependent in Bq/s
  • Meteorology: Hourly meteorological data in AKTerm, and AKS formats are accepted by the model. The AKT, AKTerm format contain the hourly data for wind direction, wind speed, rain rate, and stability class according to Klug/Manier. The AKS file contains the statistics of wind direction, wind velocity, dispersion class, and rain rate.
  • Note: To support users without access to the above met file formats, ARTM View accepts a CSV file with the following hourly met data parameters: wind direction (deg), wind speed (m/s), Monin-Obukhov Length (m), and rain rate (mm).
  • Terrain:
    • Flat or Elevated. The model accepts terrain data in GridASCII format.
    • Note: ARTM View accepts the following terrain data formats: GridASCII, XYZ, USGS DEM, and SRTM.
  • Receptors: Single or nested grid, monitor points
  • Other Options: Several additional model options are available, such as:
    • Wind field around buildings and terrain
    • Variable source parameters (temperature, thermal flow, discharge velocity, and time scale
  • Output Type:
    • The output type depends on the pollutant being modeled. Examples of possible outputs are:
    • CNC: Annual mean of concentration in units of Bq/m³
    • DRY: Annual mean of dry deposition in units of Bq/(m²*s)
    • WET: Annual mean of wet deposition in units of Bq/(m²*s)
    • G01: Annual mean of gamma cloud radiation 0.1 MeV in units of Bq/m²
    • G10: Annual mean of gamma cloud radiation 1.0 MeV in units of Bq/m²
    • Estimative of the statistical uncertainty, and
    • Time series of hourly concentration in units of Bq/m³ (only at monitor point locations)
  • Regulatory Status: New standard for the dispersion and deposition calculation of airborne radioactive materials according to the German Nuclear Act.
