The IOSH Managing Safely course is designed for managers and supervisors working in any organisation or sector. It provides step-by-step guidance with a business focus on how to implement a health and safety management system in an organisation based on HSE guidance document HSG65. It provides understanding and awareness of health and safety management tools and techniques, legal requirements, and risk assessment. Participants successful in the test and the project are awarded the Managing Safely Certificate by IOSH. 100% of participants rate this IOSH course as good or excellent, and 99% say they would recommend the course to others.

Target Audience
The course is designed for managers, supervisors, safety representatives and members of health and safety committees in all roles and functions.

Assessment Process
The assessment is broken down into two parts:

  • Participants complete an end of course test comprising short answer questions
  • Following the course, participants complete a health and safety risk assessment in their own workplace

Syllabus
The course consists of eight modules:

  • Module 1 – Introducing Managing Safely
  • Module 2 – Assessing risks
  • Module 3 – Controlling risks
  • Module 4 – Understanding your responsibilities
  • Module 5 – Identifying hazards
  • Module 6 – Investigating accidents and incidents
  • Module 7 – Measuring performance
  • Module 8 – Environment and client specific content (to be agreed)

On successful completion of the course, participants will be able to:

  • Outline the main provisions of the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 and the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999 and other relevant legislation and codes of practice
  • Explain the parts and purposes of recognised health and safety management systems such as HSG65 and OHSAS 18001
  • Define ‘hazard’ and ‘risk’, and describe the legal and other requirements for risk assessment
  • Demonstrate a practical understanding of risk assessment techniques
  • Describe workplace precaution hierarchy
  • Prepare and use active monitoring checklists and implement schedules for monitoring, recording and analysing results
  • Describe statutory requirements for accident reporting (RIDDOR)
  • Identify and use incident reporting and investigation techniques
  • Describe methods of trend and epidemiological analysis for reactive monitoring data
