Basics of Oil Spill Response. This course examines the techniques for containing oil spills, protecting near-shore areas, and recovering oil from the waters surface. The recovery of oil on water is of particular importance to the overall response function. Timely response actions may minimize the amount of oil that impacts sensitive shoreline areas. These shoreline areas are often rich in resources, easily damaged and expensive to clean. It is therefore necessary that responders clearly understand what is involved in a recovery operation, the selection of the right equipment for the particular spill circumstances, and the monitoring of the equipment's use to maximize it's effectiveness.
