Accessing and interpreting biodiversity information for high-level biodiversity screening - Video
Would you like to better understand biodiversity risks and opportunities at an early stage for your projects? Is accessing and interpreting biodiversity information often a challenge? Do you find terms & use of global biodiversity data sets difficult to understand?
The IBAT Alliance understands that insufficient management of biodiversity impacts can lead to major project risks. For example, over half of oil and gas project delays are attributed to non-technical issues, with social conflict over environmental resources being the single biggest factor. Failure to develop adequate biodiversity plans has led to major project delays caused by lenders withholding funds, stricter regulation, community push back, and licenses being revoked.
Consideration of biodiversity early in the project cycle can help avoid major project delays and help produce ‘win-win’ outcomes for the business, its stakeholders, society and global biodiversity conservation.
To help integrate biodiversity into decision-making early in the project, they have developed the Integrated Biodiversity Assessment Tool (IBAT). IBAT is a high-level biodiversity screening tool that – among other applications - can be used at an early stage in a project to understand potential biodiversity risks and opportunities. It is an online data discovery, visualization, and dissemination tool that provides users with unique single point access to the most authoritative global datasets on biodiversity and conservation. These include the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species, the World Database of Protected Areas, and Key Biodiversity Areas.
This webinar provides an overview on how to easily access these data for your projects including the terms and conditions for using these data. You can also feed into the development of a new IBAT portal due mid-2018 to help you improve the use of biodiversity information within impact assessments.
