Excavation Damage Zone Video
This clip shows the temporal evolution of hydraulic conductivity of fractures induced by tunnel excavation (i.e., the Excavation Damage Zone or simply EDZ). The aperture, and correspondingly, fracture transmissivity or conductivity, is large right after drilling. These fractures are then partly filled with air and resaturate as time evolves. It is the resaturation (and sometimes swelling of the rock or sediments matrix) that cause fracture to close.
