Alternative Fuel Production for Energy / Substitute Fuel Production for Energy

by eFACTOR3 LLC     based in Pineville, NORTH CAROLINA (USA)

Being driven by new legislation, the production of substitute fuel/alternative fuel will be gain momentum in the next few years, as well as the expected increase of recycling rate in municipalities. This means a lot of waste streams can be turned into alternative fuel for the coal fired power plant, cement and lime industry, biomass power plant, or other industrial boiler systems that still burning fossil fuels.

SSI builds shredding systems for alternative fuels processing

by SSI Shredding Systems, Inc.     based in Wilsonville, OREGON (USA)

SSI has been designing and manufacturing size reduction systems to prepare solid wastes for thermal treatment or conversion to alternative fuel. SSI has supplied hundreds of systems worldwide for generating energy from many different waste materials—from industrial, municipal, and hazardous wastes to tires, mill waste, wood and other organic materials.

Reliable Shredding Technology for Refuse Derived Fuels (RDF)

by UNTHA Shredding Technology     based in Kuchl, AUSTRIA

Our shredding solutions enable you to optimally recycle waste into substitute fuels / alternative fuels and ensure high quality by producing a homogeneous granulate free of foreign objects. The goal of recycling is to use the valuable energy contained in the waste and to substitute the use of fossil fuels. During the recycling process the portions with a high calorific value are separated from the commercial and industrial waste and turned into a marketable product. Depending on the calorific value and the granular size, these fuels are used in fluidised bed combustion, cement plants and substitute fuel power plants.

RDF/SRF shredder

UNTHA shredding technology is offering reliable RDF/SRF shredder with high throughput.

Refuse Derived Fuel (RDF) & Solid Recovered Fuel (SRF)

by Advanced Plasma Power (APP)     based in Swindon, UNITED KINGDOM

A full-scale Gasplasma® plant can make its own RDF from MSW/Commercial Waste. The waste is brought directly into a fuel preparation hall at the front of the building. Inside the fuel preparation hall there is industry standard equipment that can recover glass, metals and hard plastics from the wastes for recycling. The remaining waste is then dried and shredded to make a Refuse Derived Fuel (RDF) for the Gasplasma® energy from waste process. Clients who already produce RDF may not require a fuel preparation hall. APP can design a plant without this facility, accepting the RDF directly from the client. Secondary Recovered Fuel or Solid Recovered Fuel (SRF) is often confused with Refuse Derived Fuel because they are similar in nature. However, SRF is produced to reach a clearly defined standard such as CEN/343 ANAS whereas RDF is not.

Energy and Fuels from Commercial Waste

by Advanced Plasma Power (APP)     based in Swindon, UNITED KINGDOM

Commercial Waste is similar to Municipal Solid Waste although it tends to have more biodegradable products. Commercial waste is defined as all wastes created by commercial businesses. This can include, but is not necessarily limited to, solid or liquid wastes originating from offices, stores, markets, restaurants, shopping centres and other enterprises. We receive Commercial waste into the Materials Recycling Facility (MRF) at the front end of the Gasplasma® energy from waste plant. Any recyclable materials are recovered and the remainder is dried and shredded to make Refuse Derived Fuel (RDF). The RDF is used as fuel in the Gasplasma® plant to generate clean, renewable power and heat.

Waste Sorting - Refuse Derived Fuel

by TOMRA Sorting (TITECH)     based in Mülheim-Kärlich, GERMANY

One way in which values within waste can be utilized is by using it as fuel. RDF (Refuse Derived Fuel) is a term that applies to materials with a high calorific value (typically around 18 Megajoule per kilogramm) that are removed from waste streams. Beneficiaries of this material cement kilns to power plants. TOMRA Sorting technology has long been utilized in many plants across Europe to produce an RDF material from different waste streams according to the specific needs of the end users. The main purpose of this area of work is to ensure that the RDF has very low chlorine content, typically below 0.7% in weight. TOMRA Sortingis able to achieve this by either selecting the ‘good’ material (‘positive sorting’) or by ejecting the ‘bad’ material from the stream, such as small PVC parts (‘negative sorting’).

Sustainable solutions for transportation & logistics industry

by thinkstep     based in Leinfelden-Echterdingen, GERMANY

The amount of material flow is increasing rapidly worldwide and therefore, the volume of traffic as well. Currently, the traffic is one of the factors which cause the most greenhouse gas emissions. In Europe, it is the only sector whose greenhouse gas emissions are significantly increasing instead of decreasing. The big challenge of the industry is to handle the increasing amount of material flow and to reduce the greenhouse gas emissions and consumption of resources at the same time.  Additionally, there exist other challenges on local scale, such as pollution burden, which can be enforced through a growing urbanisation.

Alternative Fuel Production

by Superior Boiler Works, Inc.     based in Hutchinson, KANSAS (USA)

Superior Boiler Works, Inc. led the way in Ethanol production in the USA with more installed firetube boilers in Ethanol plants than any other manufacturer. Ethanol requires the distillation of sugars into an alcohol fuel. Superior’s products are used to generate heat needed for the ethanol distillation processes, heating storage tanks as well as batch reactors. Additionally, Superior Boilers can be fitted with packaged burners which fire a variety of fuels from tallow to syngas to Hydrogen and most anything in between.

Measurement solution for hydrogen fuel cell testing

by Protea Limited     based in Middlewich, UNITED KINGDOM

As the alternatives to fossil fuels for power generation and automotive power become more widespread and preferred, so has increased the research and testing of hydrogen gas in fuel cells. The hydrogen (H2) gas used in fuel cell has to be free of impurities in order to make the fuel cell as efficient as possible and so quality thresholds have been set in legislation. Such legislation as SAE J2719 provides hydrogen fuel quality standards for proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cell vehicles. If impurities above these thresholds are present in the H2 fuel then there is a risk of not only making the cell inefficient, but also unrecoverable back to its peak operating voltage as the fuel cell electrode becomes poisoned.

Energy and Fuels from Municipal Solid Waste (MSW)

by Advanced Plasma Power (APP)     based in Swindon, UNITED KINGDOM

Municipal Solid Waste (MSW), which includes household waste, is the residual waste put into a black bin bag or wheelie bin. MSW contains a mixture of recyclable, organic, inorganic and biodegradable materials. We recover as many recyclable materials as possible before drying and shredding the remainder to make a Refuse Derived Fuel (RDF) for the process. Our energy from waste process, Gasplasma®, transforms the RDF into a clean hydrogen-rich synthesis gas (syngas).

Processing of Alternative Fuels for the energy industry

by Lindner-Recyclingtech GmbH     based in Spittal/Drau, AUSTRIA

RDF is a fuel that is normally produced from waste with high calorific value. The original waste comes from households, industry and commerce and is processed for energy extraction; it is meant for co-incineration plants and replaces standard fuels (e.g. coal) in production plants for cement, power plants or other co-incineration plants.
