Business coalition study shows urgency of green economy transition
A new report by an international business coalition underscores the urgency of the need to transition toward a greener economy. The report, "Natural Capital at Risk - The Top 100 Externalities of Business", estimates the top 100 environmental externalities are costing the global economy $4.7 trillion a year in terms of the economic costs of greenhouse gas emissions, loss of natural resources, loss of nature-based services such as carbon storage by forests, climate change and air pollution-related health costs. Environmentalist receives major award for work to restore Iraq`s marshlands
In 2001, the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) alerted the international community to the destruction of the marshlands when it released satellite images showing that 90 percent of the ecosystem had been lost. An environmental activist from Iraq has picked up a major international award for his efforts to restore the country`s Mesopotamian Marshlands; an ecosystem of global importance considered by some to be the original biblical `Garden of Eden`, and the focus of a key UNEP initiative from 2003 to 2006.
