U.S. Proposes Quick Phaseout of Ozone Damaging Chemicals
WASHINGTON, DC (ENS) - The United States has submitted a proposal to adjust the Montreal Protocol to accelerate the phaseout of ozone damaging chemicals. Under the Montreal Protocol's First Stage, chlorofluorocarbons, CFCs, were phased out in developed countries by 1996 And replaced by less harmful HCFCs. After World War II, CFCs, halogenated hydrocarbons, were used extensively as aerosol spray propellants, refrigerants, solvents, and foam blowing agents, often sold under the trade name freon.
