Gas monitoring instruments and systems for engine emissions measurements

The exhaust gas from combustion engines is a complex mixture of gases and particulate matter. The composition of the gas may change rapidly. Multicomponent analysis of exhaust gases can be performed with a Gasmet™ FTIR Gas Analyzer with a response time (T90) of one second. The winning combination is the result using of a small volume gas sample cell, a powerful sample pump and a fast detector with liquid nitrogen cooling. The analyzer, sampling system and computer can be assembled on a cart for use in a dynamometer laboratory, or the portable version can be used for roadside tests.

Gas Detection and Analysis Equipment for Energy Generation Industry

Recent decades brought a rapid growth in the global demand for energy. This trend is accurate for both developed as well as developing countries. Electrical power is a key source of energy for the vast majority of the world population. Although the usage of renewable energy is on the rise, the majority of electric power production worldwide is still based on conventional methods utilizing coal, oil and gas as its fuel to power the stations.

Measurement of hydrogen in fuels for oil & gas industry

The combustion properties of fuels are key to the efficient and safe operation of engines used in machinery and plant. One important way to measure the combustion properties of a fuel is by its hydrogen content. The measurement of hydrogen content is widely used for the characterisation of aviation fuel but with the increasing costs of all fuels and the greater incentives for fuel adulteration, this test is increasingly being adopted for non-aviation applications. Our benchtop NMR analyser MQC-23 system is widely used for the measurement of hydrogen in fuels in accordance with ASTM D7171-05.

    CH4 Monitoring in Air

CH4 (Methane) is a colorless, odorless natural gas that is used in a wide variety of industrial applications such as power generation and chemical production. It is also a byproduct of many biological and geological processes, fracking, and gas drilling. It is highly flammable and creates amounts of carbon monoxide as its combustion byproduct. Methane needs constant monitoring in waste water treatment (for co-generation) and to ensure proper process control (e.g. to determine burning efficiency). A quality CH4 analyzer that is able to provide continuous monitoring is a perfect solution for this.

CO2 / CO Monitoring in Air

CO (carbon monoxide) and CO2 (carbon dioxide) are generally measured to ensure process control. CO2 is the desired product and CO is undesired in combustion since it will explode in high enough concentrations. CO2 and CO concentrations can also be used to determine other process-specific efficiencies. Continuous emissions monitoring equipment that can be calibrated as a CO and CO2 analyzer is thereby essential for process control.

  • Integrated real-time gas analysis solution for emissions industry

Pollutant emissions from industrial smoke stacks are a major national concern due to both health concerns and climate change. As a consequence, there are at least tens of gas analyzer manufacturers in the U.S. alone that compete in that market and have done so for years. What CIC Photonics brings to that competitive field is its expertise derived from its Combustion Efficiency Solution and its high performance IRGAS Systems. The IRGAS-CEM provides real-time and simultaneous measurements of the multitude of toxic combustion products, including CO, CO2, NOx, SOx, CH4, CxHy, H2S, etc. The EP-IRGAS-SPA is also applicable for fast time responses.

  • Ozone monitoring

Ozone found in ambient air can have a direct affect on human health and also has the potential to create photochemical smog. It is for this reason that the U.S. EPA has set a one hour limit of 120 ppb and an 8 hour limit of 80 ppb. Ozone has been found to affect human health by harming the respiratory and immune system. People with pre-existing respiratory damage or diseases are more likely to suffer from the affects of ozone.

  • Combustion measurement for engines

Combustion processes occur in many modern technologies such as power production, heating, automotive and aircraft engines and even explosion research.

The application areas range from fuel injection and mixing and flow velocity information to measurements of combustion species and soot concentration.

Because of the impact on the global climate and the limited resources of fossil fuels, the importance of these applications is increasing, especially with respect to performance, fuel economy and CO2 emissions.

  • Measurement solution for QAL2 EN 14181

BS EN 14181 is a quality assurance standard relevant to plants operating under the Large Combustion Plant (LCPD) and Waste Incineration (WID) Directives. Quality Assurance Level 2 (QAL2) of this standard involves the parallel testing of the plant automated measurement systems (AMS) against a certified test house, making measurements with a comparative standard.

  • Measurement solution for fire testing for the railway industry

A lot of research is carried out in laboratory and on real fires as to the gaseous substances produced in fire effluent. Measurement principles using analytical instrumentation are becoming more widely used in fire testing, due to the quick, real-time nature of the measurements. ISO 19702 is an international standard developed for the use of FTIR analysers in the analysis of gas from fire effluents. Further to this, local test standards such as DIN 5510, applicable to the railway industry, can provide further requirements for gases to be measured.
