Solutions for Remote and Island Communities - Water and Wastewater

SHARE

In island and remote regions, basic water access is not guaranteed. Miranda Water Technologies designs self sufficient systems for isolated environments where infrastructure gaps and climate extremes require smarter solutions. With decades of island experience worldwide, Miranda delivers reliable water security when it matters most.

Reliable Water Solutions for Remote and Island Communities

Island and remote communities often struggle with water access due to saline intrusion, drought, and unreliable infrastructure. Transport delays, limited spare parts, and a lack of skilled maintenance make centralized systems costly and impractical. Miranda designs resilient, decentralized water solutions with built in redundancy, SmartCell monitoring, and preventive maintenance support to ensure long term water security and community self reliance.

Sustainable Water Reuse in the MaldivesMaximizing Resources to Reduce Costs in Remote Settings

A luxury resort chain in the Maldives faced critical water challenges due to its remote location, where transporting supplies is expensive and unreliable. Miranda implemented modular Miracell systems to treat all wastewater from the resort, including blackwater and kitchen waste. The treated effluent was reused for landscape irrigation, eliminating the need to truck in additional freshwater.

The system also produced stabilized sludge, which was dried and blended with peat moss to create organic fertilizer for on-site use. This full cycle approach reduced costs related to water delivery, fertilizer imports, and waste management. In hard to access island environments, reusing every possible resource is essential to maintaining operations and controlling overhead. With low energy use and SmartCell monitoring, the system required minimal staff involvement and provided proactive alerts to ensure reliable performance. By transforming all wastewater into usable outputs, the resort achieved a self reliant model that supports both economic and environmental sustainability even in one of the world’s most logistically challenging setting.

Flexible RO SolutionsOne Standard System for Many Unique Sites

The same resort group operated across multiple islands, each with different water demands and environmental conditions. Despite these variations, Miranda deployed R/OCell® systems across all properties using a consistent technology platform. Mobile containerized units were used for smaller sites, while larger Flex models served flagship resorts. On one island, two R/OCell® systems were installed in parallel to ensure full redundancy, allowing one to be taken offline during low occupancy periods to reduce energy use.

Because all systems were based on the same core design, they shared many of the same parts, consumables, and operating procedures. This standardization simplified staff training, inventory planning, and system oversight across multiple locations. SmartCell automation enabled centralized performance monitoring, remote diagnostics, and alerts, making it easy for the resort group to manage water operations across its portfolio. With consistent spare part kits, unified maintenance checklists, and streamlined troubleshooting, the R/OCell® platform gave each resort location the independence to operate effectively without needing custom engineering or external technicians. It proved that one resilient solution could meet many different needs without complexity.
