Are You Overlooking These Mold Removal and Prevention Steps? You Might Be Surprised.

This YouTube video offers a helpful 7-step overview for how to locate mold and what actions you can take to kill the mold and prevent it from coming back. His company specializes in clean air filtration systems.

His video offers a helpful summary with some good reminders that may seem fairly obvious, but are often overlooked. We have added a few comments below to expand on his 7 steps.

Step 1: Find the mold. Don’t forget to look for hidden mold locations such as inside wall cavities, in hvac ducts, behind wallpaper, in/under carpets, in attics and crawl spaces.

Step 2: Determine source of moisture that causes mold growth. Overlooked sources include leaky window casings, gutter drain pipes not extended away from foundation, landscaping that drains toward home foundation, crawl space not properly sealed, poorly vented bathrooms, bathrooms vented into attic instead of to exterior, humidifiers in winter set too high, infrequent cleaning of HVAC ducts, etc.

Step 3: Fix moisture problem. If needed, hire professionals to ensure the moisture problem is properly fixed.

Step 4: Remove and kill mold. Cut out sheetrock. Replace insulation. Whatever is needed. Remember to use protective goggles, mask, gloves, clothing.

  • To clean mold, we recommend using our non-toxic Endurance BioBarrier Mold & Grime Cleaner.
  • To prevent mold regrowth, we recommend using our non-toxic Endurance BioBarrier Mold Prevention Spray.
  • If mold is covering a large area, we recommend you hire a certified mold remediation contractor. Use our mold remediation company directory to find one near you.
  • Please don’t use bleach. Read our article about why bleach doesn’t kill mold roots.

Step 5: Prevent mold re-growth. Use a hydrometer to monitor humidity. And use a dehumidifier if needed. Don’t rely on your A/C system to dehumidify.

Step 6: Get fresh air into your home. Ensure your HVAC system has mold allergen reducing HEPA filters and that your home has proper exterior ventilation.

Step 7: Monitor and maintain your moisture repairs. Keep an eye out for new moisture problems. Get them fixed ASAP if spotted.
