Project reference

Project:
Pilot project in the Northern and Central Europe

Project period
1999-2000

Nature of task:

  • simultaneous determination of PAH concentrations in the ambient air of four European countries
  • evaluate the contribution from different emissions to the ambient air concentrations of PAHs

Summary

Three order of magnitude difference of PAH amounts were detected between different regions. The PAH concentrations in air were highest in Czech Republic and Slovakia, with about 10 times higher levels in these regions compared to the ambient PAH concentrations in Sweden. The PAH concentrations in air of Austria were found to be higher compared to PAH concentrations in Sweden but lower than Czech Republic and Slovakia. The highest PAH amounts sequestered by SPMDs were detected at one of the site in Slovakia in summer 2000 which is urban area with iron industry. No clear seasonal variation in concentrations could be seen for the locations during summer and autumn. Sampling sites close to traffic and/or industries had highest PAH levels in air.
