For the Austrian motorway station at Murau, a membrane bio reactor with an AQQA®80 was installed by Wastewater Solutions Group in order to meet the stringent effluent requirements for discharge into a small river. The key factor in the choosing AQQA® for this project was the fact that the load of BOD, COD and Ammonia is high but nevertheless the membrane filter must perform without maintenance on site. The filter operates presently without chemical backflush, only with the semi-cross flow imposed by the aeration system.

In small decentralized systems, typically no automatic backflush systems are installed and it is essential, that the drop in permeability is as slow as possible, so that intensive membrane cleaning can be reduced to a cycle of once per year. The next optimization step will include a regular CIP intervall to make use of the backflush possibility of the AQQA® membrane and to extend the maintenance clean intervall to 2 years.

The AQQA operates now for 250 days with a permeability of above 100 l/m²h.bar at an average flux of 25 l/m²h. The effluent values are well below the limits set by the Austrian law.
