Customer: Fremont Analytical, Seattle, WA, USA

Fremont Analytical Inc. is a full service environmental laboratory located in the Fremont neighborhood in Seattle, WA. Fremont Analytical offers a full range of analytical services including organic, inorganic and general chemistry analyses for soil, water and air.

Application: EPA Method 8082A – Chromatographic Analysis of Polychlorinated Biphenyls (PCBs)

Method 8082A is used to determine the concentrations of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) as Aroclors or as individual PCB congeners in extracts from solid and aqueous matrices. Open-tubular, capillary columns are employed with electron capture detectors (ECD) or electrolytic conductivity detectors (ELCD). Due to the testing limits and the detector, a hexane exchange step must be applied.

Equipment: The Syncore® Analyst R-12 with Flushback Module, Vacuum Pump V-700, Vacuum Controller V-855 and 0Recirculating Chiller F-108

The Syncore® Analyst is a parallel vortex evaporator that concentrates solvents under vacuum and safely collects the evaporated solvents, producing an automated and safe concentration process. It is applied for several EPA Methods such as 8270/625, 8081A, B/608, 8082/608, 8015, 8013, 8151, 8315, 525, 607, 508, 3510, 3546, and 325. With the wide spread concern of solvent emissions, the Syncore® Analyst helps labs keep solvent emissions at a minimum.

Benefit / Conclusion: An automated, environmental friendly approach to EPA Method 8082

The Syncore® Analyst with Flushback module was found to be the most efficient and robust method for solvent exchange ever used at Fremont Analytical. This semi-automated solvent exchange provides increased recoveries of spiked samples, while saving thousands of dollars a month on preparation costs. The benefit of recovering over 96% of the extraction solvent makes the use of this evaporator essential moving forward.
