Motivation

Vista Clara NMR Geophysical Equipment helps clients image the subsurface to accurately define hydrogeologic properties including
porosity, pore size, mobile and bound water content, permeability, and transmissivity. We offer equipment for sale or rent, as well as, professional consulting services to our customers.

Our equipment is available for environmental remediation, groundwater resource management, geotechnical/construction and
mining projects. Anywhere groundwater must be managed or engineered our technology provides more accurate data to help you manage your project with lower risk, lower costs, and improved outcomes.

Vista Clara provided extensive, on-site, training and equipment demonstrations to European customers to highlight magnetic
resonance (NMR) technology, which enables them to directly detect and image subsurface hydrogeologic properties.

Special thanks to all partners:

  • Leibniz Institute for Applied Geophysics for providing access to facilities and the GMR-Flex and Javelin Wireline equipment
  • Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research – UFZ for providing the Geoprobe for the Dart Direct Push demonstration
  • Aarhus University for providing the Dart equipment
  • Allied Associates Geophysical GmbH for organizing the events
  • All of the participants who attended the event.

Technical Approach

NMR measurements were performed using three different Vista Clara geophysical instruments including the Dart DP140 Direct Push Probe, the Javelin Slim Wireline Tool and the GMR-Flex surface instruments. Measurements were taken at the test location to demonstrate how each instrument can be used to characterize the subsurface hydrogeology including total porosity, bound and mobile water, pore size, permeability and transmissivity.

Direct Push Logging with Dart and Geoprobe
Direct Push logging measurements were demonstrated using the Vista Clara Dart DP140 logging tool. The Geoprobe allows the Dart to be deployed in areas where an existing monitoring well is not available or is cost prohibitive.

Dart Logging Tool Deployed by Hand

The Dart was then logged in an existing 50 mm PVC-cased shallow borehole. The well was installed using a 7-8" drill bit and completed by letting the formation to collapse back on the PVC casing.

The disturbed zone of the formation was outside the sensitive zone of the tool but still demonstrated the flexibility of deploying the tool by hand in an existing borehole.

Javelin Wireline Logging in PVC-cased Hole

The Javelin Slim Wireline Tool was used to log a 3 inch PVC-cased well at the demonstration site.
The JPY238 has two depths of investigation and can take measurements at 9 in and 11 in. It is rated to 2350 psi (162 bar) and 158 DegF (70 DegC).

GMR-Flex Surface NMR Measurements

The GMR-Flex surface equipment was set up with two different loop configurations and three separate pulse sequences.

The GMR-Flex has exceptional output power in a small and flexible package. It has a depth of investigation of up to 80m and can provide non-invasive characterization of hydrogeological properties.

Takeaways
This was a wonderful opportunity for Vista Clara Inc to train existing customers and to demonstrate our equipment to new potential customers. Whether deploying NMR via Dart Direct Push or handheld logging, Javelin Wireline Logging tools or GMR-Flex surface equipment, Vista Clara technologies provide geoprofessionals with direct measurement of hydrogeologic properties.

The ability to quantitatively measure porosity, water content, mobile and bound water, and estimates for permeability and transmissivity help improve outcomes for geo-professionals.   It helps improve project outcomes by providing more accurate measurement that improve designs and reduce project risks and costs.

Vista Clara and our distributor Allied are ready and able to meet customers` NMR needs in Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Belgium and The Netherlands.
