Customer: Himachal Pradesh University, Shimla, India

The Department has identifi ed ‘Industrial enzymes and processes’ as the thrust area with the objective of exploration and conservation of microbial diversity of Himachal Pradesh, enzyme and fermentation technology development, isolation and characterization of extremophiles for novel enzyme/ products and screening and evaluation of active principle(s) of medicinal plants. Various microbial enzymes that are being purifi ed and studied for their diverse applications include nitrilases, amidases, hydratases, lipases, pectinases, cholesterol oxidases, peroxidases, epoxide hydrolases, xylanases, glutaminases, asparaginases, chitinases, phenol lyase and acyl transferases.

Application: Biotransformation

Whole microbial resting cells and free enzymes were immobilized and used for the synthesis of various commodity chemicals and products of immense industrial and pharmaceutical signifi - cance. The prodcuts are quantifi ed by both spectrophotometric as well as HPLC/GC.
Equipment: Encapsulator B-390

Microbial cells and their enzymes were immobilized using Encapsulator B-390 using different matrices.

Benefit / Conclusion: Faster Encapsulation of cells and enzymes

Immobilized microbial resting cells and enzymes are used in organic synthesis to fully exploit the technical and economical advantages of biocatalyst based biotransformations because it enables the separation of the enzyme catalyst easily from the reaction mixture, and can lower the costs of enzymes dramatically. By encapsulating cells/enzymes in different matrices using Encapsulator B-390, we have obtained a varies size range beads within a very short time which is otherwise a very lengthy and time consuming process.
