Itinerary Naples - Apice, Benevento and Avellino, Italy - Case Study
Project
As part of an infrastructure and technology upgrade, Italferr designed a EUR 1.1 billion, 19-kilometer extension of a high-speed, high-capacity rail line. The route runs from Naples to Bari, Italy, through landslide-prone topography. The project team decided to implement BIM methodology to design the optimal route for the challenging landscape.
Solution
To optimize design, the project team implemented a collaborative BIM approach while developing the entire length of the route. Team members worked in a connected data environment to manage multi-discipline data flow during planning and design. Using Bentley’s interdisciplinary applications, the team generated 3D design models and shared them with all project participants, improving collaboration.
Outcome
In December 2017, the project team completed the design of the entire rail route. Bentley applications facilitated optioneering, enabling the team to reach an optimal solution in a shorter timeframe and reduce project costs. The railway axis will enable the local population to access the high-speed line from Naples to Milan, playing a key role in the development of southern Italy.
Software
The team used ProjectWise as the platform for the connected data environment, which provided control over all shared documents and allowed designers to clearly distinguish file versions. Descartes enabled the quick production and processing of point clouds to gather all necessary information while OpenRail was used to generate 3D models of the track. Navigator allowed the team to work in a single, federated model for clash detection, resolving potential errors prior to on-site construction.
