Subsurface Drainage - Private Tennis Court, Sydney, Australia - Case Study
- Project Location: Private Tennis Court, Sydney, Australia
- Project Details: Drainage Cell installation for a tennis court
- Completion Date: September 2003
Good drainage of the court is essential as it provides the right conditions for the growth of the grass – the correct amounts of moisture and air – and allows routine maintenance to be carried out more quickly and easily. The owner chose to use Atlantis products to help grass growth which was slow due to the shady nature of the site. The use of the suitable Atlantis medium ensured that the playing surface was not waterlogged, decreasing the waiting time required for the court to be available for play.
The use of Atlantis subsurface installation under tennis courts is twofold. Water infiltrating the playing surface is collected and moved to a storage area or directed to existing stormwater system. The other purpose of the drainage layer is a "capillary breaker" used in areas with ground water problems or heavy clay soils. When installed properly, it prevents vertical movement of ground water under a surfaced area.
