The Intersection of Workplace Safety and Environmental Sustainability: Achieving Sustainable Workplace Safety Practices

The industrial sector has been a major contributor to the earth's resource depletion and pollution. According to the research report 2022, construction industries produce 30.56 billion tons of Greenhouse Gas (GHG) yearly.

Polluted air contains detrimental gasses like carbon dioxide and methane, which cause a lot of health-related problems for workers, such as respiratory issues, dizziness, and, in extreme cases, asphyxiation. These gasses contribute to poor air quality. They are extremely harmful to construction workers exposed to dust, fumes, and other particulate matter.

Equipment used in construction sites also contributes to pollution. Construction machinery runs on diesel, which emits fumes that contain harmful gasses. Workers, when they breathe in the containment air filled with toxic gasses, develop health issues.

Due to a lack of proper disposal areas, workers dispose of the waste materials in the water bodies nearby. The waste material contains chemicals, and when they mix up in the water bodies, they harm the aquatic ecosystems and water quality.

Pollution at industrial sites, specifically construction sites, presents a dual harm. One for the environment and the second for the health of workers. Organizations have to ensure that they provide an eco-friendly environment to their workers.

OSHA has taken the initiative to ensure the sustainability of the environment and workers' health. Let’s find out how.

Following are the ways to ensure the sustainability of your workers and environment.

Use environment-friendly material

As an organization, you should invest in machines and equipment with a lower environmental impact throughout their lifecycle. Recycled and sustainably sourced materials, such as wood, can be used.

By using recycled material, your organization will reduce waste and pollution. Less energy will be consumed, making air less polluted. These materials are less harmful to people and contain fewer dangerous chemicals. Recycling materials is a wise investment. They may be expensive but can save money in the long run. They don’t utilize a lot of energy as compared to traditional materials.

With advanced technology, insulation materials are available with a high R-value. These materials require less energy. By using eco-friendly materials, you would reduce waste and save resources.

Chemical Safety Management

Multitudes of chemicals and hazardous materials are used in industrial sectors. Workers should be trained to use and handle these substances properly. You must teach them how to identify and segregate chemicals depending on their type. A lot of damage happens during transferring of these chemicals.

Regulations should be set firmly for the workers to ensure they don’t show any negligence while transferring the substances. When these chemicals are spilled, they harm the workers and the environment. Skin problems occur due to direct chemical exposure, and when these chemicals spill on the ground, they contaminate the soil.

Arrangements for the Disposal of these chemicals are absolutely important. You need to ensure they are properly disposed of at the end of each day as they contaminate the air.

Controlling Air Pollution

Air must be monitored in order to control pollution. Your organization should implement systems that improve the air quality of the workplace. Workers should be encouraged to quit smoking and properly use the machinery to prevent excessive emissions.

The monitoring systems notify you about the air quality, temperature, and pollutant levels so you can take corrective action immediately.

Healthy air will reduce exposure to dangerous chemicals. A pollutant-free atmosphere that is free of emissions also contributes to a healthier ecosystem.

Report Sustainability

Reporting sustainability is another important step to improve health and safety for all employees.

With sustainability reporting, organizations become transparent with their stakeholders regarding what their objectives are, the strategies they adopt, and how much progress they have made to ensure a sustainable environment. This transparency will add value and credibility to your reputation.

Sustainability reporting also identifies various risk factors. By implementing the changes, they can be corrected, and preventive measures can be taken for the future.

For example:

Purchasing sustainable products reflects your determination towards a sustainable environment, but how would stakeholders know about your endeavors? If you have a proper system for regular sustainability reporting and share this report with them, you enhance transparency and build trust with your customers.

Similarly, documentation of your organization's progress to achieve a sustainable environment will reflect your commitment to responsible and sustainable practices.

Show compliance with State Laws

Every state has rules and regulations regarding hazardous materials used in construction sites. You must enforce these rules in your organization and make sure that your workers show compliance. Not adhering to these standards can cause you significant financial loss. If an organization is found to be non-compliant with chemical regulations, it will be charged with a felony.

Poor compliance with the State laws will be damaging to the environment as well, as the hazardous chemicals potentially contaminate soil, water, and air.

For example:

A company was sued for not providing a safe workplace to its workers with a fine of $500,000. Additionally, it was fined $2,400,000 for failing to take preventive measures to prevent fire due to mishandling of chemical stockpiles.

OSHA Guidance and Training for the Win

OSHA 360 training and guidelines are for all sectors, whether construction, agriculture, or maritime. It emphasizes workers' safety, which is the one thing that makes it stand apart. It provides extensive courses to train employees to teach them how to identify, assess, and control hazards in the workplace. You can get your OSHA online training from OSHAOutreachCourses.com.

OSHA is a firm believer in the ideology that suggests for having sustainable businesses and growth, organizations must ensure the security, health, and well-being of their workers.

It has partnered with multiple companies and organizations to take its vision a step forward. OSHA has teamed up with the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) to develop a standard for sustainable workplaces. With collaboration, they strive to build a responsible workplace and workforce for a sustainable environment.

In OSHA’s Strategic Plan for 2021-2025, promoting sustainability in the workplace is highlighted as one of the core objectives of the plan. This sustainability program has been successful in achieving its goals by developing and implementing standards, creating strategies, and through rigorous research.
