The MoldSTAT Report
The MoldSTAT report for spore trap analysis provided by EMLab P&K is a compilation of statistical tests conducted on spore trap data to generally aid in the interpretation of whether the data observed suggests a source of fungal spores from the different locations sampled. The various statistical tests conducted on the data include the Friedman chi-square analysis, the Agreement ratio analysis, the Spearman rank correlation analysis and a fungal specific analysis called MoldSCORE.
The Friedman chi-square test aids in the determination of whether a difference exists in the data from different indoor locations. The fungal types found in the different indoor locations are relatively ranked and statistically analyzed for variation that occurs between the indoor locations. The assumption (hypothesis) that is tested is that there is no meaningful difference in the data of the different indoor locations, or in other words, that the types and relative levels of fungal spores observed in the different indoor locations are not significantly different from each other. The result obtained from the Friedman chi-square test is compared with a standard critical value, which is determined based upon the degrees of freedom of the test and a significance level of 0.05. If the result obtained is greater than the critical value, then the hypothesis is rejected at the given significance level, otherwise it is accepted. If the hypothesis is accepted then it suggests that the occurrence of the different organisms is similar at all indoor locations and that any difference occurring is due to normal variation. On the other hand, if the hypothesis is rejected, then it suggests that there is a difference between the indoor locations and that the occurrence of the various organisms is not the same in one or more indoor locations.
Agreement ratios compare the types of organisms seen in the outdoor sample with those seen in an indoor sample. The agreement ratio compares the type of fungal spores present and does not take into account the concentration of the individual spore types seen in the two locations. An agreement ratio falls between the values of 0 and 1. A score of 1 indicates that the types of fungal spores seen in the indoor sample are the same as those seen in the outdoor sample. A value of 0 indicates that none of the fungal types detected indoors are present outdoors. Typically, an agreement ratio of 0.8 or higher is considered a high degree of similarity.
