Tyre-Tread Particles: A Hidden Threat to Aquatic Life
Particles from the tread of vehicle tyres are a global pollutant, which are emitted into the environment. Recent research highlights the chronic toxicity of tyre-tread particles and leachates on Daphnia magna, a key species in freshwater ecosystems. These tiny water fleas play a critical role in maintaining the ecological balance, but exposure to microplastics and chemicals from tyre wear could impair their survival and reproduction and global aquatic environment.
Study led by Paul Boisseaux from the University of Exeter showed that microparticles and leachates showed distinct effects on reproduction and morphological development at environmentally relevant concentrations, with dose-dependent uptake of particles visible in the digestive tract. https://lnkd.in/ekdTx3nc
