What are the differences between an overflow ball mill and a grid ball mill?

Overflow ball mills and grid ball mills are both commonly used types of ball mills in the mining and mineral processing industry. While they share some similarities, there are distinct differences between the two.
Discharge Mode:
Overflow Ball Mill: In an overflow ball mill, the ore slurry flows out of the mill through the trunnion overflow discharge.
Grid Ball Mill: In a grid ball mill, the ore particles are discharged from grid plate openings and the discharge end of the mill is equipped with a grid plate to allow the ground material to pass through.
Structure:
Overflow Ball Mill: The overflow ball mill consists of a hollow cylindrical shell that rotates on its axis. The shell is generally longer in length compared to its diameter and has a conical or tapered end for the discharge. The feed enters through one end and the ground material is discharged through the other end.
Grid Ball Mill: The grid ball mill is similar in structure to the overflow ball mill. However, it has grid plates installed on the discharge end, which divide the mill into several compartments. These grid plates hold the grinding media in place and allow the finely ground material to pass through the grid openings.
Operation and Efficiency:
Overflow Ball Mill: The overflow ball mill is suitable for wet grinding operations. It relies on the gravitational force to discharge the ground material, which may result in a lower grinding efficiency compared to a grate discharge mill. It is commonly used for processing softer ores.
Grid Ball Mill: The grid ball mill is typically used for dry grinding operations. The grid plates prevent the coarse particles from entering the finer grinding compartment, leading to improved grinding efficiency. It is often used for processing harder ores.
Application:
Overflow Ball Mill: The overflow ball mill is commonly used for primary grinding or re-grinding operations in mineral processing plants. It is suitable for processing materials with relatively coarse particles.
Grid Ball Mill: The grid ball mill is often used for secondary grinding in mineral processing plants. It is suitable for processing materials with finer particle sizes.
