Why Many Ozone Systems Fail in Industrial Ozone System Design
Ozone technology is highly effective when implemented correctly. However, many installations fail to deliver the expected results due to design and implementation choices rather than a deficiency in the technology itself.
The most common causes are:
- 1. Systems designed around equipment instead of the process
In many projects, ozone generators are selected first and the system is then designed around that equipment. Effective ozone systems are designed around the actual ozone demand of the process, including water chemistry, flow rate, treatment objectives, and contact conditions. When these factors are not properly considered, systems may be undersized or inefficient. - 2. Low ozone concentration
Many ozone generators on the market produce relatively low ozone concentrations. Low-concentration ozone significantly reduces dissolution efficiency and requires larger systems to achieve the same treatment effect. Higher concentration ozone enables more efficient transfer into water, allowing smaller, more economical systems and improved overall performance. - 3. Misleading generator output ratings
Ozone generators are often marketed by their nominal production rating in grams per hour. What matters in most applications is not the generator’s nominal output, but how much ozone can actually be dissolved and utilized in the process. Two generators with identical nominal output can yield very different real results depending on concentration and system design. - 4. Oversimplified package systems
Standardized or one-size-fits-all packages fail to account for wide variability in ozone demand, water chemistry, flow, and treatment objectives. Applications require system customization to achieve optimal performance and efficiency. - 5. Lack of technical guidance
Insufficient technical information often leads to incorrect implementation. Successful ozone systems require understanding both the process and how ozone behaves in that environment.
