1st Line Defence - Unexploded Ordnance (UXO) Risk Assessments

Preliminary & Detailed UXO Risk Assessments A UXO Risk Assessment is the process of reviewing and accessing the risk of potentially encountering items of explosive ordnance during the ground investigation stage – and should be considered for both shallow and deep intrusive projects (on land or marine projects). UXO Risk Assessments take into consideration not only the historic risk of contamination in an area, but also factors such as the scope of the proposed works, geology, burial depth, water depth and risk / consequences of detonation. Usually undertaken at the very start of a project and prior to intrusive ground works, our bespoke and non-automated desktop study reports will highlight any potential risk factors on your project. All relevant sources of information will be accessed, analysed and presented to the client with detailed analysis, and if necessary – we will provide recommendations to mitigate any potential risk of UXO on your project.

1st Line Defence - Unexploded Ordnance (UXO) Non-intrusive Survey

UXO Surveys are an innovative, state-of-the-art ground investigation technique used to identify any unusual characteristics in the subsurface to locate buried targets – including items of UXO. We provide a variety of Non-intrusive UXO Survey services (walkover, towed or Drone) and the type of survey we recommend is dependent on the risk level, ground conditions and the proposed scope of ground works. This service is Ideal for site projects which are located on undeveloped land or marine environments with little extraneous ferrous contamination. In good ground conditions, a Non-Intrusive UXO Survey can detect a 50kg bomb up to 4m below the surface. It is also ideal for locating smaller and more shallow-buried items such as grenades, mortars and projectiles. The survey specification we recommend will be suitable for the detection of UXO, and additional survey techniques can also be included within the specification of the geophysical survey to provide additional value to your project.

1st Line Defence - Unexploded Ordnance (UXO) Intrusive Survey

If Non-intrusive UXO Survey methods cannot provide clearance to full bomb penetration depth, intrusive survey techniques can also be deployed. This may include hydraulic push or drilling methods to insert magnetometer probes into the underlying strata to survey columns of ground which will provide clearance from UXO, allowing clients to undertake intrusive works such as piling or drilling in certified cleared locations with confidence. This allows for a check of both ferrous anomalies directly beneath the probe (the probes have look-ahead capability), and for any horizontal deviation of the probe (detected by inclinometers in the probe body) so that if necessary the survey can be terminated or corrected. Each survey position provides a column of clearance down to an assessed maximum bomb penetration depth (which for generic London clay can be up to 12m below ground level), and we can often check multiple pile locations per survey – reducing the overall number of surveys required.

1st Line Defence - Unexploded Ordnance (UXO) Investigation & Clearance

1st Line Defence provides a complete UXO risk mitigation solution for land and marine projects across the UK and Internationally. We combine our in-house geo-services with our insights and experience of working in challenging land and marine environments, to offer an integrated survey, identification and clearance solution that manages the risk posed by UXO – and provide ALARP clearance. We can provide highly-qualified and experienced UXO/EOD & Target Investigation Teams (land, onshore and offshore) to conduct investigation and clearance operations – either as a standalone service as the project lead – or by integrating our specialists within an already established project team to provide dedicated UXO support to the project. Clearance solutions may include or require a ROV, diver, dredging or land based teams – and we can support a wide-range of projects including: land, offshore, near-shore, within waterways, ports, harbours and rivers.

1st Line Defence - Unexploded Ordnance (UXO) Recovery & Disposal

We employ highly experienced project management and UXO/EOD specialist teams to conduct recovery, disposal and clearance operations. Explosive techniques including high and low order methods have been developed over many years to make sure that we have the capability to dispose of UXO safely, and to minimise risk to the environment. Techniques may include the recovery, storage and final disposal of UXO, and if located offshore it may be recovered to land for transportation and disposal. Disposal in-situ – the use of explosive means to destroy UXO on land or the seabed – for offshore projects this operation might be completed by high or low explosive methods, and is dependent on the environment and any other constraints that might be present. In all cases; planning, safety and environmental mitigation are the corner stone of every 1st Line Defence recovery, disposal and clearance operation.
