Extended Producer Responsibility

The concept of EPR or Extended Producer Responsibility, introduced in the Plastic Waste Management (PWM) Rules 2016 as amended 2018, obligates entities - Producers, Importers, Brand Owners (PIBOs) - to ensure that 100% of plastic waste generated during the end of life-cycle of their product is sustainably processed. PIBOs are responsible to take back post-consumer plastic waste from households or any other source of its generation, through their own channel, Waste Management Agency (WMA), or through Urban local bodies (ULBs) and recycle or co-process the same in an environment friendly manner. India produces 9.5 million tons of plastic waste every year. About 60% of plastic waste is collected for recycling. However, while plastic may be labeled as recyclable, only a small fraction of it is technically or economically viable to recycle. A large pool of plastic waste ends up in landfills, open dumps, and water bodies.
