Competitive Advantage

Amatola Water offers municipalities ease of engagement though the Municipal Finance Management Act (MFMA) and the Municipal Systems Act (MSA) concerning water services. In terms of these acts, municipalities are entitled to engage the services of Amatola Water through direct negotiation rather than through normal procurement processes. The legislation provision empowers municipalities to respond rapidly to the dynamic and demanding environment of water services.

Bulk Water Sales

All agreements between customer institutions and Amatola Water are circumscribed by requirements set out in the Water Services Act, the National Water Act, and other relevant local government legislation. The legislation provides for water board business relationships to be concluded with the recognized water services authorities that have been tasked with the administration of water services delivery.

Infrasructure Development

Amatola Water invests considerable effort in maintaining a dedicated planning capability. These planning resources and expertise are shared with clients in business and development planning. The availability of this service facilitates and encourages integrated planning among participating institutions in the local government services arena. In offering project management services, Amatola Water does not compete directly with external consultants, but rather provides an overall project implementing management function that seeks to ensure that the best interests of the client is exercised. The scope of Amatola Water´s involvement in municipalities´ infrastructure development processes may include any of the project stages, starting from preliminary planning right through to final project implementation and evaluation.

Water Services Provision

Amatola Water´s core business is the provision of bulk water services comprising potable water and sanitation. Water Resource Management

Water leakage management is important for all water providers in controlling the negative impact that leakages have on financial viability and water resources utilization. Amatola Water is conversant with best practice regarding non-revenue water and is qualified to conduct investigations and to implement customised interventions to minimise adverse variances/illegal connections. DWAF has been implementing projects on the clearing of alien vegetation from river and dam areas to reduce water losses – Working for Water. Amatola Water has acted as an implementing agent to manage the essential activities for a number of these projects such as the control and eradication of the South American floating plant - Water Hyacinth - in a number of Eastern Cape rivers.

Scientific Services

Amatola Water has a well equipped, accredited (SANAS in accordance with ISO 17025) laboratory to analyse samples of raw and treated water for internal use and for external customers. The SANS 241 class 1 standard has been adopted for the purposes of ensuring that the quality of water supplied to customers meets acceptable standards and is of consistently high quality. Water quality is a contentious and a sensitive issue. Amatola Water is constantly exploiting new technology in order to ensure that it is regarded as a service provider that will ensure the delivery of “high quality, cost-effective and sustainable water services. Consistent internal monitoring audits conducted on samples of water produced at all treatment plants managed by Amatola Water ensures that water quality levels remain at a high standard and are tested according to the SANS 241 Class 1 water quality specifications. ISO14000 and ISO 17025 quality control standards to improve internal management systems have been implemented. Amatola Water remains an active role player in DWAF’s National Microbial Monitoring Programme (NMMP) as well as the Provincial Drinking Water Quality Task Team (PDWQTT).

Institutional & Social Development

An Institutional and Social Development (ISD) facilitator assists Amatola Water and its clients in conducting community discussions and negotiations regarding the implementation of operations and development projects.
