Sample Protocol & Receiving Services
American Analytical Services, Inc. has a standard operating procedure (SOP) for all aspects of sample drop off, drying and preparation, digestion, instrument analysis, quality control assurance and computerized data reporting.Beginning with the prearranged schedule for sample shipments, AAS will insure a representative will be present to receive samples, fill out and check accuracy of chain of custodies (CC), log in samples and document any special instructions. Soil and rock samples will be dried and/or preserved for analysis. Soil samples will be panned and dried for 24 hours. Water samples will be preserved and refrigerated at 4°C until time of analysis.
Metallurgical Sample Preparation Services
Before sample preparation begins, samples are placed in order of priority. Samples are then jaw and cone crushed to approximately 10 mesh. Sample is then split down to about 250g and ring pulverized to 140 mesh. The rejected portion of sample is returned to the original sample bag, saved and returned to the client. Barren rock is run through the crushing equipment between samples to clean the crushers, and one sample each day/client is provided as a sample preparation blank to be run with the normal samples. During pulverization silica sand is used between each sample to clean bowl and rings to prevent salting of samples. The 140 mesh pulp sample is placed in sample envelopes and sent to the digestion room. Samples are delivered to the instrument lab and analyzed for metals (generally by ICP) and screened for any work that may be required.
Quality Control Procedures Services
Calibration of instrumentation is done daily before analysis is carried out and then checked with control standards. Analytical working standards are those made from approved stock standards traceable to the National Bureau of Standards (NIST) and purchased from a reputable vendor. A logbook will be kept detailing the preparation of these standards. A notebook is kept of the working standards including date made, concentration, preparation volumes, and analyst. Daily standards are those made up from working standards each day due to low concentrations of the analyte or decomposition problems. All working standards are stored in airtight bottles.
