Asbestos is the name given to a number of naturally occurring, fibrous silicate minerals mined for their useful properties such as thermal insulation, chemical and thermal stability, and high tensile strength. Asbestos is commonly used as an acoustic insulator, thermal insulation, fire proofing and in other building materials. Many products are in use today that contain asbestos. Asbestos is made up of microscopic bundles of fibers that may become airborne when asbestos-containing materials are damaged or disturbed. When these fibers get into the air they may be inhaled into the lungs, where they can cause significant health problems.

RoHS is an acronym for `Restriction of the use of Certain Hazardous Substances,` which refers to the ban on the use of hazardous sub- stances in electronic equipment under European Parliament directive2002/95/EC and also, informally, to the upcoming prohibition on some of the same substances in some electronic devices sold or offered for Sale in California. The objective of the RoHS Directive (2005/618/EC), effective 1 July 2006, is to restrict the use of six hazardous chemicals -- lead (Pb), mercury (Hg), hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI), cadmium (Cd), polybrominated biphenyl flame retardants (PBB), and polybrominated diphenyl ether flame retardants (PBDE) -- in electrical and electronic equipment.

People are increasingly aware of the deleterious effects of particulates on human health. Therefore, the identification and source of particulate material in our environments take on added significance. Particle Characterization by Light Microscopy, also called Particulate Analysis, can provide the hygienist a broad overview of the particulate state of the environment that is of concern to his clients. The quality of reports of particulate analysis is significantly dependent on the analyst. For best results, it requires broad training, lots of experience and aptitude. Hence, it is important to have your samples done by a lab and an analyst you can trust.
