Aqua Biofilter - Floating Wetlands & Floating Islands

The Aqua Biofilter™ is an advanced biofiltration technology designed for the treatment of wastewater, stormwater, aquaculture water, and various water bodies like ponds, dams, and lakes. It integrates a biomimicry approach to replicate natural ecosystems, thus purifying water by removing pollutants and excessive nutrients. The technology involves creating floating wetlands and islands, which are equipped with biofilms and plants to enhance water quality. This approach has been applied in the world's largest aquaponics floating wetlands project in Lake Taihu, China, demonstrating significant efficacy in cleaning up toxic algae blooms. The floating wetlands can be retrofitted into existing water bodies or integrated into new designs, making them versatile and cost-effective. Performance metrics show reductions of Total Nitrogen (TN), Total Phosphorus (TP), Total Suspended Solids (TSS), Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD), Biological Oxygen Demand (BOD), Chlorophyll (Algae), clarity, metals, and pathogens. These systems enhance hydraulic retention time in detention basins, contributing to better water storage and treatment. The filter foam used is non-toxic and proven safe for both freshwater and marine environments, although natural materials like reeds, coconut fibers, bamboo, and jute are preferred for their superior support for plant root growth. The Aqua Biofilter™ has been deployed in various locations, including Sydney Olympic Park and experimental setups in Nanjing eco-city, showcasing improved water transparency and nutrient removal.
