ARC - Model 100 - Advanced Small Modular Reactor
The ARC-100 is an advanced small modular nuclear reactor designed to produce up to 100 megawatts of electricity, enough to power approximately 75,000 households. Unlike conventional reactors, the ARC-100 utilizes sodium as a coolant, which allows it to operate at lower pressures, thus enhancing both safety and efficiency. One of the standout features is its ability to consume recycled spent fuel, significantly reducing waste and its hazards. The compact design occupies less than a city block, and its modular components can be transported and installed using standard commercial equipment. A hallmark of its design is passive safety, ensuring that it remains fail-safe without the need for external power or operator intervention during power outages. The ARC-100 has a core designed for a 20-year refueling cycle, using metallic uranium alloy fuel which offers excellent heat transfer and is cost-effective to produce. The reactor builds on proven technology from the EBR-II, having demonstrated robustness in sodium-cooled fast reactor operations.
