Flow Regulation- Flow Regulation Mechanical

bgu - Balance Regulator

The most important functional elements of the Balance Regulator regulator are the pivoted radial gate, the weighing trough and the regulating weight. These remain in the rest position during low discharge periods with the pivoted radial gate in the fully open position. As the influent discharge increases, it flows through the regulator housing into the weighing trough. The increasing weight and force of the water pushes the weighing trough down and the regulating weight up. Both movements are transferred to the pivoted radial gate by means of coupled levers which initiate the regulating process. As the force of the water on the weighing trough increases, the pivoted radial gate closes thereby decreasing the discharge opening. The Balance Regulator regulator opening is automatically adjusted to match the upstream water level, resulting in a constant regulated discharge.

bgu - Jet Regulator

The most important functional elements of the Jet Regulator regulator are the pivoted radial gate, the jet shield and the regulating weight. These remain in the rest position during low discharge periods with the pivoted radial gate in the fully open position. When a storm event occurs and the water level upstream of the unit increases, the water jet, flowing through the regulator, is deflected and hits the movable jet shield. The force of this jet produces the energy required for starting the regulating process. The stronger the force acting on the jet shield, the more the pivoted radial gate decreases the discharge section. The regulator opening is adjusted to match the force of the water on the jet shield, in such a way as to result in a constant discharge, for all variations of the upstream water level. The position of the regulating weight determines the discharge setting which can be easily adjusted on site to modify the design discharge should it be required.

bgu - Compact Regulator

The Compact Regulator compact discharge regulator is installed in the structure`s wet well and is acted upon by the upstream water level. The compact design consists of an integral float housed in a watertight enclosure which controls the position of the pivoted radial gate. Because of this watertight enclosure, the large variation of the upstream water level is reflected over a much smaller range within the housing. The position of the float within this housing determines the size of the regulator opening. This ensures a constant discharge over the entire range of the upstream water level. If a blockage occurs, the resulting force of the water on the debris pushes the radial gate up, fully opening the flow section. This causes the debris to be flushed out under pressure (flush-out effect). The radial gate then returns to its normal operating position.

Overflow Screening

bgu - Fine Slotted Screen

The Fine Slotted Screen is constructed entirely of stainless steel 316 ensuring reliable trouble free operation. Self adjusting brush provides automatic cleaning of  screening surface in both directions. The Fine Slotted Screen cleaning system may be driven by a water wheel (requiring no external energy) or by an electro-hydraulic drive, depending on site constraints. Slotted screening surface ensures the retention of all solids greater than 3/16". Design of cleaning system mechanism ensures that moving parts are never submerged. Modular design allows for installation over virtually any overflow weir type and size. Easy to retrofit into existing structures. May be installed in the vertical or diagonal position when the preferred horizontal arrangement is not possible due to site constraints.

bgu - Self Raking Static Bar Screen

The Self Raking Static Bar Screen self-cleaning bar screen is used in small CSO structures with fixed overflow weirs to prevent coarse debris from entering the receiving stream. At the end of the overflow event this screened debris is transported, with the dry weather flow, to the treatment plant. Using no external energy, the Self Raking Static Bar Screen will automatically clean itself aftewr every overflow event. The Self Raking Static Bar Screen is designed to swing up and out of the flow path should it be clogged with excessive debris, thereby preventing any negative impact on the upstream water level.

Flood Protection

Check Element

Check Element check elements are especially suited for the prevention of flooding caused by high downstream water levels. The check elements are equipped with flexible elastomeric covers (or flaps) that act as seals. The most important feature of the Check Element is their modular construction. They are well suited for new designs or can be easily retrofitted to accommodate existing structures.

Check Flap

The Check Flap is designed to prevent backflows at sewer overflow locations as well as in retention tanks and basins. Receiving stream outlets can also be equipped with the Check Flap for flood control applications. In case of rising down-stream water levels the Check Flap will prevent water from getting into the sewer system. Overloading of sewer systems and sewage treatment plants is avoided and energy costs for pumping systems and sewage treatment are reduced.

Overflow Control

Model U - Overflow Bending Weir

The Overflow Bending Weir Type U is installed on the existing fixed overflow weir, with its pivot points attached to the structure’s ceiling, sidewall or crossbeam. The pivot balances the forces produced by the hydrodynamic loading on the overflow weir flap with those of the counterweight. This ensures equilibrium in any weir position, resulting in a highly sensitive response to the slightest change in the upstream water level. The Overflow Bending Weir Type U remains in the rest position (closed) until the maximum design storage level is reached. Upon reaching this level, the Overflow Bending Weir Type U immediately responds and swings away from the sill, allowing the excess water to overflow while maintaining a constant upstream water level.

Model O - Overflow Bending Weir

The Overflow Bending Weir Type O, is designed to react instantly and will automatically adjust itself in order to constantly maintain the designed overflow water level. The key component of the Overflow Bending Weir Type O is the eccentric control disc. This eccentric control disc is designed to supply a permanent balance of forces between the hydrodynamic pressure of the water (acting on the upstream face of the bending weir) and the counterbalancing weight. Should the additional inflow be greater than the design peak discharge, the Overflow Bending Weir Type O will remain fully open and act as an emergency overflow.
