Biolog products
Microbial Identification
Rapidly and accurately identify over 2,900 species of aerobic and anaerobic Bacteria, Yeasts, and Fungi. Biolog’s advanced phenotypic technology provides valuable information on the properties of strains, in addition to a species-level identification. Molecular methods such as 16s sequencing and MALDI-TOF provide no information about the properties of the strain. Biolog’s carbon source utilization technology identifies environmental and pathogenic microorganisms by producing a characteristic pattern or “metabolic fingerprint” from discrete test reactions performed within a 96 well microplate. Culture suspensions are tested with a panel of pre-selected assays, then incubated, read and compared to our extensive databases.
Phenotype MicroArrays for Microbial Cells
Phenotype MicroArrays (PMs) represent the third major technology, alongside DNA Microarrays and Proteomic Technologies, that is needed in the genomic era of research and drug development. Just as DNA Microarrays and Proteomic Technologies have made it possible to assay the level of thousands of genes or proteins all at once, Phenotype MicroArrays make it possible to quantitatively measure thousands of cellular phenotypes all at once. Phenotype MicroArray technology enables researchers to evaluate nearly 2000 phenotypes of a microbial cell in a single experiment. Through comprehensive and precise quantitation of phenotypes, researchers are able to obtain an unbiased perspective of the effect on cells of genetic differences, environmental change, and exposure to drugs and chemicals.
Microbial Community Analysis with EcoPlates
Microbial communities provide useful information about environmental change. Microorganisms are present in virtually all environments and are typically the first organisms to react to chemical and physical changes in the environment. Changes in microbial communities are often a precursor to changes in the health and viability of the environment as a whole. Created in accord with recommendations of microbial ecologists specifically for community analysis and microbial ecological studies. Biolog EcoPlates have been found to provide a sensitive and reliable index of environmental change.
Customizable Phenotype MicroArray MicroPlates
Phenotype MicroArrays are designed to enable a comprehensive characterization of a cell’s physiological pathways for processing nutrients and handling stress. They interrogate metabolic pathways and chemical sensitivity properties of cells, allowing scientist to discover ways to optimize, inhibit or simply compare cellular behavior. Optimize your experiments by assigning a unique substrate from over 1,200 chemicals in Biolog’s library, to each well of a 96 well MicroPlate. Dive deeper into your research by designing custom MicroPlates that allow you to ask the most relevant questions for your experiments. Interrogate 1000’s of metabolic pathways based on your chemical specifications.
Microbial Detection using Chromogenic Media
Rainbow® Agars offer a simple selective and chromogenic medium to help you conveniently detect strains of E. coli O157, Salmonella, Shigella and Aeromonas with results in less than 24 hours! Rainbow Agar O157 has both selective and chromogenic properties that make it particularly useful for isolating pathogenic E. coli strains. The medium contains chromogenic substrates that are specific for two E. coli-associated enzymes: ß-galactosidase (a blue-black chromogenic substrate) and ß-glucuronidase (a red chromogenic substrate). Rainbow Agar Salmonella utilizes an enhanced detection chemistry to determine H2S production among Salmonella spp., Black colonies are formed by even weak H2S producing strains. In addition, novel selective agents increase the recovery rate of Salmonella while inhibiting the growth of other enteric bacteria and inhibiting H2S production by Citrobacterand other H2S positive enteric species.
