Chitin and Chitosan - Natural Biopolymers

Chitin belongs to the group of natural biopolymers, such as cellulose, starch and protein. It is a light building material, but has a high mechanical load capacity.  It occurs in the exoskeleton of crustaceans and insects, as well as in the cell walls of fungi. Ideal Flocculant for the Separation of Sludge

BioLog`s HEPPIX OT was specifically developed to be the ideal flocculant for the separation of sludge from lake and river beds. Chitosan, the core ingredient of HEPPIX OT, has been categorized as "non-hazardous to waters" by the German UBA (Federal Environmental Agency). HEPPIX OT is a strong bonding agent for biomass, minerals and heavy metals, such as magnesium and iron, and thanks to its biodegradable and non-toxic status, can be safely and quickly applied to open and running bodies of water, to separate out the targeted elements. Those bond in long chains to the flocculant and drop as sediment, creating both a distinct clear and un-clear layer in the treated water with an exceptional dewatering behavior or become flakes that can be easily separated by appropriate filter systems.

Swimming Pool Treatment

HEPPIX AS was specifically developed by BioLog Heppe to be the ideal flocculant for the separation of algae and micro-organisms from swimming pool water. Chitosan, the core ingredient of HEPPIX AS, has been categorized as "non-hazardous to waters" by the German UBA (Federal Environmental Agency). HEPPIX AS differs from non-biodegradable and artificial alternatives, in that it does not kill the algae, but merely bonds to it, forcing it to build large flakes, which swim to the water`s surface, making them easy to skim off the top. This facilitates the cleaning process through the use of conventional automated back flush filtration systems, without having to rely on labor intensive pool bottom sweeping or vacuuming.

Textile Treatment

BioLog Heppe has developed unique chitosan products for the textile industry that increase the tensile strength of individual fibers as well as the quality of color printing absorption. Chitosan as a sizing agent helps to increase the tensile strength of fibers during the weaving process, which results in less thread breakages. Unlike conventional starch application methods for strengthening fibers, it does not require the post-weaving washing processes, thus saving time, money, and water. It makes the process more environmentally friendly, because the waste water is less polluted. Chitosan`s cationic nature makes it an ideal dye application additive for the textile industry. The anionic coloring agents, like reactive dyes form covalent connections with chitosan, which helps to create a more solid bond with the underlying fabric as well as enhancing the richness of the dye`s color.
