Healthy lakes and ponds provide us with a number of environmental benefits, influence our quality of life and strengthen our economy.

Most cities have not grown in a planned way like Chandigarh or Mohali resulting in multiple issues. One of the common issue that plagues all cities is proper treatment of raw sewage water. This leads to pollution of groundwater aquifers, water bodies like lakes and rivers and also becomes the cause of vector born diseases.

Adsorption is the process of attraction of atoms or molecules from an adjacent liquid to an exposed solid surface. Such attraction forces (adhesion or cohesion) align the molecules into layers or `biofilms` onto the existent surface. In the river, dirt is absorbed by these `bio-films` formed on the surface of the gravel. Some microorganisms like benthos and bacteriophages present in the river and riverbed degrade harmful bacteria. They assist in the self-cleansing process to a very large extent. In order to mimic this, we use local raw material to create a platform for `bio-films` to get created. We introduce our own probiotic microbes to help form these films in the drains.

Water is aerated naturally by flowing over pebbles beds or rocky falls. Large boulders found in rivers act as barriers and natural aerators. The `bubbling `or frothing water is thus aerated. In order to mimic this, we create natural barriers in the drain to act as aerators. Wastewater in drains is made to fall a certain distance for aeration to take place.

Large quantities of gravel, pebble and silica are found in the riverbed. These act as natural water filters. The water passes through them, thereby getting naturally filtered. We have again managed to mimic this amazing quality of rivers innovatively by using local materials.

Sedimentation is the tendency of particles in suspension to settle out of the fluid in which they are entrained, and come to rest against a barrier. Troughs and crests present in the riverbed helps the river water to sediment its impurities in the flowing channel. Impurities also settle down on the banks of the rivers. We emulate this by using sand bags and other local material with excellent results.
