Floating Ecosystems

Biomatrix - Model 3D - Floating Ecosystem Modules

3D modules are designed to be planted with individual plants and may be arranged according to a planting design. Six layers of material in the planting lane construction provide a flexible substrate that adapts to a wide range of plant sizes. 3D modules are suited to all types of planting and are our most popular ecosystem module. Floating Ecosystem Modules have multiple benefits including habitat creation, urban waterscaping, water quality management and wastewater treatment.

Biomatrix - Model 2D - Floating Ecosystem Modules

2D modules are designed to be planted with pre-planted coir mats typically containing a mix of native plant species.  Pre-planted coir mats can be rolled out over the floating structure to create an easy to install pre-rooted planting area. 2D modules are best suited to a wild planting aesthetic.

Biomatrix - Model 4D - Floating Ecosystem Modules

The 4D matrix is our strongest floating ecosystem.  Structurally upgraded from the 3D with triple bolting to be applied in even more challenging and dynamic environments. 4D modules are suited to all types of planting and are recommended for locations with waves or flowing water.

Biomatrix - Model 2D - Island Modules

The 2D island modules are designed to take pre-planted coir mats that can be rolled out onto the island structure. The mats typically contain a mixture of native species. If installed in spring or early summer, the plants are quick to establish as they have been pre-grown and are already rooted into the coir mat. The coir mat will biologically disintegrate within the first two growing seasons, after which the plants are supported in the long term by the layers of structural mesh that are part of the 2D island system.

Other Products

Biomatrix - Floating Walkways and Platforms

Floating wetland ecosystems can become accessible to visitors, schools, and researchers by integrating them with floating walkway components.  Walkways and floating platforms can be added as community spaces, classrooms, picnic areas, observation decks, kayak launches, or fishing spots to create floating parks and wetland boardwalks.

Biomatrix - Active Island Reactor

The Active Island Reactor is an engineered floating ecology designed to optimise powerful natural treatment processes within a planted aquatic landscape feature. The AIR combines the latest developments in ecological engineering with new biofilm research and wastewater treatment processes. Whole system engineered ecologies provide an energy efficient, low life cycle cost treatment solution. The system is suitable for contaminated canals, rivers, lakes and reservoirs, as well as providing effective treatment of high strength waste in purpose built treatment cells, ponds or tanks.

Helix - Flow Reactor

The Helix Flow Reactor has been engineered to provide a modular ecological wastewater treatment system with a smaller footprint than a constructed wetland.  This is the ideal choice for high strength influent.

Biomatrix - Multi-Stage Recirculating Constructed Wetland

The Multi-Stage Recirculating Constructed Wetland (MSR Constructed Wetland) harnesses the powerful treatment capacity of natural treatment systems in an engineered environment. The MSR sub-surface flow constructed wetlands’s multiple stages and controlled recirculation rates provide a high performing, low energy and robust ecological treatment system.

Biomatrix Dynamic - Biofilter Media

Within an aquatic environment the microorganisms that clean water need habitat, such as plant roots, in order to thrive and form into biofilm communities. Biofilms are highly effective at improving water quality. We have designed a proprietary media that provides the ideal habitat for growing and sustaining these biofilms. Biomatrix Dynamic Biofilter Media has the maximum amount of surface area available for bacterial colonization. One meter of dynamic media equals approximately 15 m2 of root surface. There can be up to 9 columns of Dynamic Biofilter Media per m2, so there can be up to 135m2 of active biofilm surface area per m2 of floating ecosystem. This means that Biomatrix Floating Ecosystems have increased water treatment capacity, providing impressive water quality results.
