The development, planning and realization of facilities and processes for the avoidance and diminishment of pollutant releases based on product or process integrated environmental protection forms the focus of the BS business field plant and process engineering.

We understand our environment as a complex network of single subsystems being protected best by sustainable handling of the central environmental protection goods water, air and soil where the focus here is directed towards the system soil and water. For the preservation of these protection goods, the emissions into and the impacts of the environmental media have to be analysed and limited to standards being reasonable with respect to macroeconomics.

Based on the new EURATOM regulations on radiation protection, dated May 13, 1996, there is a necessity for the member states of the European Union to evaluate themselves suitable regulations concerning the exposure to natural radiation sources showing compliance with title VII, paragraph 2 of the basic demands of the above mentioned regulations. The exposure of reference persons by material containing enhanced levels of activity due to the natural decay lines of U-238, U-235, Th-232 and K 40 covers the handling of raw material, the succeeding industrial handling and processing as well as removal of residue material.

The management of radioactive waste and the design, realisation and operation of repositories for radioactive waste requires the utmost in safety standards and technical training.
