Industrial exhaust fumes range from low-calorific lean gas to high-calorific fuel gas, which can come with a considerable explosive potential depending on the oxygen content and composition. This is the reason why it is impossible to provide a solution off the shelf, but every plant is tailor-made and adapted to the site conditions.

Biogas and landfill gas originates from bacterial degradation of organic substance, producing methane as an oxidizable component. These gases therefore show similar combustion behavior. Biogas usually has a higher methane concentration than landfill gas, but the remainder is almost solely the quenching gas carbon dioxide, which has an influence on the igniting properties and flame stability.

Lean gases are gases that mainly consist of the inert components nitrogen and carbon dioxide and contain such a low concentration of oxidizable components as to preclude their use for energy utilization. Industrial exhaust air is a special kind of lean gas. Industrial exhaust air stands for air with traces of hydrocarbons below the lower ignition limit. They cannot be combusted spontaneously. Due to the oxygen concentration, they can become explosive if the hydrocarbon level increases. Thus they have to be considered separately from true lean gases.
