I am excited that this year’s conference will feature expanded use of the Sacramento Convention Center, allowing the over 150 Technical Sessions and the Exhibits and Equipment Displays to be held in the same building. This year’s conference theme is “Oceans of Opportunities,” which incorporates both my personal love of our oceans and the critical work that California’s wastewater professionals do to protect our water environment and California’s spectacular marine ecosystems. “Opportunities” refers not only to the fantastic training opportunities available at the conference but also to the idea that despite current difficult economic conditions, wastewater professionals are also faced with a unique opportunity to demonstrate the essential nature and exceptional value of the service they provide in protecting public health and the environment. I hope that all wastewater agencies seize this opportunity to talk openly about the importance of their mission to the communities they serve, as well as the professionalism, skill and dedication with which their staff members carry out that mission.
