Picture a drilling rig. Now, picture a flying rig. Sound hard to believe? It’s a Cenovus innovation that allows us to fly a drilling rig into a remote location one piece at a time. And since everything is flown in, no roads are needed. That means limited disturbance of the forest and no additional traffic.

In our steam-assisted gravity drainage (SAGD) operations, we drill horizontal wells in pairs, one well above the other. We`re able to drill multiple well pairs from a single well pad. Over time, a pocket of unrecovered bitumen forms in the space between two well pairs. Wedge Well™ technology is a Cenovus innovation that allows us to access that wedge of bitumen by drilling a single horizontal well between two SAGD well pairs and pumping the oil to the surface through this additional well.

Our oil sands assets in Northern Alberta are the cornerstone of our Upstream production business. We’ve been operating in the oil sands for more than two decades, using a drilling method called steam-assisted gravity drainage – or SAGD for short.

We produce high-quality asphalt at our refinery in Lloydminster, Alberta. Our products include performance-grade, polymer-modified and recycled asphalts for building roads and increasing the pavement life cycle. These innovations are rigorously tested in certified labs. Advancements we make in product development are supported by a research alliance with the University of Calgary.

We are one of the largest producers of drilling and completion fluids in Western Canada.
