Chitin was initially isolated from mushrooms and named fungine in 1811. About 12 years later chitin was also discovered in insects. Chitin (β-1,4-N-acetyl-D-glucosamine) is a component of the cell walls of fungi, insects and crustaceans, and after cellulose it is the most abundant natural biopolymer. Chitin represents an almost inexhaustible  source of chitosan; arthropods constitute the main source. In contrast, chitosan is only found in the cell walls of certain groups of fungi.

The unique properties of nanoparticles has allowed their application in many fields such as biomedicine, drug and gene delivery, tumor detection, tumor vaccines, tissue engineering.
